HANSON!
You remember Hanson, right! Their huge hit MMMbop really was top of charts. I admit it, I listened. I sang. I loved. So why does this song bring me inspiration? For starters, it just makes you happy, right!? Deeper into the lyrics you’ll hear it mentioned that we have so many things that come in and out of our lives, and it just goes so fast – BAM… and it’s gone. What doesn’t go away? The things we choose to hold onto. The things that matter. The things we want to improve on or seek. All of those things stay, but only because we want them to. There’s a lot of negativity surrounding the business of voiceover. It costs too much. It’s not easy. Always getting rejected. Steep learning curve. Have to be business oriented. Need coaches. All of these things are true sure, but what have you held onto that wasn’t difficult and had mountains to climb?
If the voiceover world is truly so negative.. why are there so many doing it? Wouldn’t it be better to just get a job as a veterinarian and spend your day with cute puppies and kitty cats? The answer is because the idea or desire came about, and we held onto it. Not only did we hold onto it, but we nourished it. We fed it. We grew it. It’s a love for the arts. For me personally, I enjoy helping people. It’s rewarding for me to help a company get their message heard in the way they need it to be heard. Staying on top of trends, putting yourself out there, and learning how to become a business owner, audio, marketing, and social media guru is a task, sure. It’s an on-going process, but that’s what makes it fun!
“Plant a seed, plant a flower, plant a rose
You can plant any one of those
Keep planting to find out which one grows
It’s a secret no one knows
It’s a secret no one knows
Oh, no one knows”
What I’ve learned, it’s work but it’s pretty simple. Plant your seeds, just like I am. Do the work, and keep going forward, because the more you learn, plant, practice and do – the more you’ll grow. There’s a ton of websites, blogs, podcasts, social media groups, books, classes, coaches, and other VO actors that can, and will help – but they will all tell you the same. That’s the secret! Every day I’m grinding it out, making things better, polished, and professional. #VOlife
Go out there and do the same.. but don’t stop listening to music. It inspires. You know you want to listen to MMMbop now. Go ahead: I won’t tell anyone 😉
